- Shiranthi -
The First lady Shiranthi Rajapakse rarely gives interviews to the newspapers. In an interview to “Rivira”, this Sunday’s edition she had revealed a lot of facts which had been not known to many in the country.
Shiranthi hails from Badulla and her father was initially a Navy officer. She has two brothers. She had studied at Bambalapitiya H.F.C and she had taken part in sports having excelled at Tennis, Hockey and Netball. After schooling she had successfully studied a degree in Primary Education, Montessori in particular. She had been once crowned with the title as’ Miss Sri Lanka’.
She had stated that Mahinda Rajapakse was a lawyer at that time and she has had liking to his proposal. She had also mentioned that her horoscope had been a rare horoscope to which it had been difficult to find an easy match. However Mahinda Rajapakse’s horoscope had matched with hers very well.
She had told in detail the hard times she went through when Mahinda Rajapakse was in jail and when she taught at Carlton Nursery School while sending her children to school.
She had shown how she maintains a healthy and cordial relationship at home with her children being quite lenient without punishing them too much and she had pointed out that her success in family life is due to the fact that she never entered politics.
Answers she had given to the questions asked about her children are appended below:
Did the eldest son have a dream from childhood to enter politics?
From his childhood he is very argumentative when he talks, sometimes I too got annoyed. My mother used to say at such times that this child shows signs of been becoming a future lawyer. Finally my mother’s predictions came true. The eldest son used to cross-question on anything. I of course, didn’t see any signs of him entering in to politics.
Your second son joined the Navy at a very crucial time of war. How did you allow and face that decision?
I faced that moment very happily. I didn’t have any fears since my father too was once a Navy Commander. However I allow and value the decisions of my children, if not we lose our understanding and hence the happiness within the family.
What is your youngest son doing?
He is in England studying Medicine. His aim is to be a doctor. Apart from that he likes to be an astronomer. He is studying for that as well studying both aircraft engineering and training in becoming a pilot.
They must be having love affairs since they are in good age?
We can’t resist those. Nowadays things are different, unlike in our childhood. They must know how to choose a good partner. After that we can give our blessings. We don’t go to force and prevent and pressurise them unnecessarily.
